Class Description

Join Christine Rai for excursions & workshopping starting in September with the culminating Community Roundtable Discussion on December 2nd. Artists and writers are invited to explore a deeper understanding of Indigenous Peoples of the Potomac Piedmont for this Community Roundtable Project with an experiential focus. Use curated resources and dynamic site visits to inspire a final artwork or creative writing piece inspired by the history and culture of the Ag Reserve’s original inhabitants. $250 to participate - supplies not included Open to 10 Participants - age 16+ Christine Rai is graciously donating half of her fees to Riverworks and the other half to Through Piscataway Eyes. Thursday, Sept 7th: Roundtable Cohort Orientation 6:00-8:00pm at Riverworks Studio at Alden Farms. The cohort will get acquainted; receive an overview of our objectives, schedule, goals, and final project brief; and get started on brainstorming. Saturday, September 30th: Day trip with site visits to Historic St. Mary’s City  and Jefferson Patterson Museum (carpool/caravan). 7:30am depart Riverworks and return ~6:00pm.  Dress for the weather; wear comfortable walking shoes; pack a water bottle, snacks, bug spray; and bring a sketchbook/journal to capture on-site inspirations. (Meet at Riverworks and depart 7:30am. Arrive HSMC 10:00am. Picnic box lunch & discussion 12:00pm-1:00pm on site. Depart HSMC 1:00pm. Arrive JPM 2:00pm. Debrief 4:00pm. Depart JPM 4:30pm. Arrive Riverworks ~6:30pm.) Saturday, October 14th: Tour of local sites led by Christine (carpool/caravan) 9:00am-1:00pm Start at Riverworks and end at Locals. Dress for the weather; wear comfortable walking shoes; pack a water bottle & bug spray; and bring a sketchbook/journal to capture on-site inspirations. (9:00am-11:30am Meet at Riverworks to begin tour. Tour discussion/debrief and share final project progress and Q&A over lunch at Locals 11:30pm-1:00pm.) ​ Saturday, November 11th: Group meeting/project check in/work session 3:00pm-6:00pm at Riverworks. Bring your sketchbook/journal and final project materials for sharing, input, and editing/refinement. We’ll also be reviewing logistics for the final presentation.  September-November: Ongoing support via Zoom group chats Saturday, December 2 from 5 - 7 pm - Community Roundtable Project Discussion to celebrate the work of all participants & to share the experience with the community.
