Join Christine Rai for excursions, workshopping, and learning experiences that will dive into the history and communities of indigenous peoples of Maryland. The program starts in March, and culminates in a Community Roundtable Discussion on June 15th. Artists and writers are invited to explore a deeper understanding of Indigenous Peoples of the Potomac Piedmont for this Community Roundtable Project with an experiential focus. Use curated resources and site visits to inspire a final artwork or creative writing piece inspired by the history and culture of the Ag Reserve’s original inhabitants. Participants have full freedom to define the medium and format of their final work. This project has been financed in part with funds from Heritage Montgomery and Montgomery County Government. Christine Rai is graciously donating half of her fees to Riverworks and the other half to the Maryland Nonprofit group Through Piscataway Eyes. Schedule: Saturday, March 16th: Roundtable Cohort Orientation Riverworks Studio at Alden Farms. The cohort will get acquainted and receive an overview of our objectives, schedule, goals, and final project. 6:00-8:00pm Saturday, April 13th: Day trip with site visits to Historic St. Mary’s City and Jefferson Patterson Museum. Includes tours of historic sites from HSMC docents, discussions, and hands-on archeology activities. 7:30 am - 6:00 pm (carpool/caravan). Saturday, May 4th: Tour of local sites led by Christine, starting at Riverworks and ending at Locals. Discuss tour and share final project progress over lunch at Locals. ​9:00 am - 1:00 pm (carpool/caravan) Saturday, June 8th: Group meeting and work session at Riverworks Studio. Bring your notes and final project materials for sharing, input, and editing/refinement. We’ll also be reviewing logistics for the final presentation. 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm Saturday, June 15th: Community Roundtable Project Discussion to celebrate the work of all participants & to share the experience with the community. This event is free to the public, so they can hear participants present their work and talk about their experience. 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
