Made-in-Studio: Mosaic Making

Friday, October 2, 1-4pm In this creative, hands-on Made-in-Studio, we'll explore the ancient art of mosaic and discover how small, individual pieces can come together to create something beautiful and meaningful. We'll begin with a brief look at the rich history of mosaic, from its origins in ancient Mesopotamia to the vibrant works of Antoni Gaudí and contemporary artists who continue to reinvent this timeless medium. Participants will learn the fundamentals of mosaic design and construction while exploring a range of creative approaches. Whether you're drawn to intuitive, abstract compositions, geometric patterns, meaningful signs and symbols, or realistic imagery, you'll create a mosaic that reflects your own vision and style. Throughout the workshop, we'll also reflect on the metaphorical beauty of mosaic: how seemingly separate fragments can be transformed into a larger, unified story. This perspective invites us to explore creativity, community, and our own personal lives through the lens of connection and wholeness. Materials, guidance, and inspiration will be provided. Any level of artist from true beginner to advanced is welcome and will be comfortable in the class. By the end of the workshop, you'll leave with a completed mosaic ready for a simple grout application at home, along with the confidence and skills to continue exploring this enduring medium! Kendra Rubinfeld has been teaching art for over 20 years. She has led classes at Sitar Arts Center in DC, the Connelly School in Potomac, MD, and various private and community events around the region. She is a multi-medium artist herself, using recycled and used materials to create whimsy, child-like curiosity, appreciation of nature, and activism. Her work has been shown at Rhizome, Bluemont Fair, Takoma Park Market, and more. She loves connecting with people through creativity, and gets a real serotonin boost from watching the most reluctant of artists find their flowstate through creative expression.
